What do you do when you have left-over yarn? Make a mandala! This could be used as a coaster or just to look pretty on your desk!
To make this Mandala I used a 3.5mm hook and Scheepjes Catona yarn in colours red, green, purple and orange. You will only need a small amount of each skein, perfect for using up scraps of yarn!
You can find the PDF of this pattern here.
Some of the rows require working into a row one or two below the one you are working on. That makes it a bit hard to describe so if you’re struggling, I’ve also put some photo instructions against some of the harder to describe rows below!
UK Crochet Terms Used
- Chain (ch)
- Double Crochet (dc)
- Double Treble Crochet (dtr)
- Half Treble Crochet (htc)
- Treble Crochet (tr)
- Slip Stitch (ss)
- Repeat instructions between * * as directed
Notes: Please read all of the instructions through before you start.
Join each new colour in the top of the first stitch of the last round (use a stitch marker to help)
At the end of each round, join with a sl st into top of first stitch and pull through to cast-off.
Sl st counts as a stitch throughout
The Pattern
Row 1: In colour 1 (red for me)
Make a magic loop, ch3 (counts as stitch), then make 10tr into the magic loop. [11sts]
Row 2: Change to colour 2 (green for me),
Ch1, 2dc in same stitch as you joined the new colour, 1dc in next, then *2dc in same stitch, 1dc in next, repeat from *until there is one stitch remaining, 2dc in same stitch [18 sts]
Row 3: Change to colour 3 (purple for me),
Ch3, 2tr in same stitch as you joined the new colour, *ch1, sk1, 3tr in same stitch, repeat from * to end of round, ch1 [36 sts]
Row 4: Change to colour 4 (orange for me)
Ch2, 1dc in same stitch as you joined new colour, 1dc in next stitch, *2dc in same stitch, then hold row 3 to the front and 1dtr in skipped stitch of row 2, 2dc repeat from * to 2 stitches from the end of round, 2dc in same stitch then 1dtr in final skipped stitch of row 2. [46 sts]
Note: Some additional info on where to make the dtr is as follows:
Once you have done your first 4dc, make the dtr as follows:
It should look like this…!
Row 5: Change to colour 1 (red for me),
Ch2, 1 htr in next 4 stitches (first htr goes into stitch that you joined the new colour), *hold row 4 behind and 1tr into ch-sp of row 3, 4htr, repeat from * until end of round, ending with 1tr in ch-sp of row 3 [46 sts]
Row 6: Change to colour 2 (green for me)
Ch1, 1dc in each stitch of round [47 sts]
That’s it! 🙂 you’re done except to weave in the ends. Make sure you do this securely!
I tried it out as a coaster…. not with tea but with Aperol Spritz. I think it works well! 😊
Enjoy!
